Publication or report

Following publication of our National stop and search learning report, we surveyed chief officers to understand their assessment of stop and search in their force and to prompt reflection on what further actions could be taken in line with our 18 recommendations. We received responses from all 43 territorial police forces. This report provides a summary of some of the initiatives adopted by police forces to improve the use and scrutiny of stop and search.

The Association of Police and Crime Commissioners has written a letter to all Commissioners, Deputy Mayors for Policing and Crime, and other Police Governance Bodies in England and Wales, to highlight the learning opportunity offered in our report.

In December 2023, a joint super-complaint investigation was conducted between the IOPC, HMICFRS (His Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services) and College of Policing regarding section 60 Stop and Search. Read the super-complaint investigation report and media release.
