Investigation

On 23 October 2022, a motorbike failed to stop for Humberside Police officers when requested to do so and a short pursuit commenced. The motorbike drove through red traffic lights, over mini roundabouts, and in the oncoming traffic lane during the pursuit.

Police officers attempted to catch up to the motorbike which drove at speeds above the posted speed limit. A short time later, the motorbike collided with a car being driven by a member of the public who was correctly negotiating a mini roundabout. The motorbike rider and passenger riding pillion, as well as the car front seat passenger, all suffered injuries.

We attended the scene and post incident procedure and conducted a detailed examination. Vehicle-mounted camera footage was analysed, along with the officer accounts, police radio transmissions and the incident log.

Our investigation concluded in January 2023.

The investigation concluded there was no indication any police officer may have behaved in a manner that would justify the bringing of disciplinary proceedings or committed a criminal offence. All officers were treated as witnesses and cooperated fully with this investigation.

We carefully considered whether there were any learning opportunities arising from the investigation. We make learning recommendations to improve policing and public confidence in the police complaints system, and prevent a recurrence of similar incidents.

In this case, the investigation did not identify any learning.
