**Update - December 2022: We have referred the actions of a Gwent Police constable to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) over alleged excessive force used during the separate arrests of two men in Newport.

One incident occurred on Friday 9 July 2021 at a garden at Livale Court, Bettws and the other took place on Malpas Road on 8 May 2021.

Following our investigation, we have referred the police constable to the CPS for consideration of potential assault charges.

The IOPC’s investigation began after complaint referrals from Gwent Police in July and August last year.

We have a responsibility to refer any case to the CPS where there is an indication that a criminal offence may have been committed. A referral to the CPS does not mean that criminal charges will necessarily follow.

At the end of our investigation, we also submitted our report to Gwent Police with our views on future disciplinary proceedings against the officer.
