Arrest of man - South Yorkshire Police, September 2022

In September 2022, South Yorkshire Police arrested a man who then escaped lawful custody. Whilst attempts were made to locate and arrest the man, he committed a series of further offences before he was finally arrested. 

The matter was received as a mandatory referral from South Yorkshire Police and our investigators conducted an independent investigation. We obtained and reviewed witness statements, other documentation, body-worn camera footage, and radio transmissions. 

Our investigation concluded in June 2023 and we anticipate a misconduct meeting to take place for one officer in September 2023.

We carefully considered whether there were any learning opportunities arising from the investigation. We make learning recommendations to improve policing and public confidence in the police complaints system, and prevent a recurrence of similar incidents. 

In this case, the investigation has identified some learning areas which will be shared with South Yorkshire Police.
