A Merseyside Police officer has been charged with assault following an Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) investigation.

Police Sergeant Peter Jordan, aged 52, was the custody sergeant on the evening of 16 December 2018 when a 23-year-old man was brought into the custody suite on St Anne Street after being arrested for being drunk and disorderly.

During his detainment, the man suffered injuries to his face and later complained about the force used on him. This was referred to the IOPC in January 2019 and we began an investigation.

Our work was completed in December 2019 and we submitted evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) who made the decision to charge PS Jordan with a section 47 assault occasioning actual bodily harm in May this year.

He is due to appear before Warrington Magistrates Court on 7 July 2020.
