Our investigation into the shooting of a man by a Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) officer in Bywater Place, London, SE16 on Tuesday 30 January is progressing.

The deceased has been formally identified as Bryce Hodgson, 30, from Dulwich. An inquest was opened and adjourned at Southwark Coroners’ Court on 14 Feb.

It heard two shots were fired from a police issue firearm after armed MPS officers had entered an address. A post-mortem examination was held on Friday 2 February and the provisional cause of death was given as gunshot wounds to the neck and chest.

We are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal police shooting and will also examine any contact the MPS had with Mr Hodgson, following a conviction for stalking in June 2023.

Regional director Mel Palmer said:

“Our investigation is in its early stages but we are working hard to piece together what happened on 30 January.

“We have reviewed body-worn footage, conducted house to house enquiries in the area, obtained footage from members of the public, interviewed witnesses and taken statements from the police officers who attended the incident.

“We have met with Mr Hodgson’s family to explain our role and will keep them updated as our investigation progresses.”
