Independent investigation after two men die following Greater Manchester Police pursuit
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has begun an investigation after two men died following a Greater Manchester Police (GMP) pursuit.
The incident happened on Frederick Road, Salford at around 11.40pm on Wednesday 23 September.
We understand the pursuit involved an unmarked police car and the vehicle being pursued collided with two other vehicles.
Sadly, two men in the pursued vehicle have died. We will be making contact with their families as soon as possible to explain our role.
Three other members of the public, two women and a man, travelling in one of the other vehicles were taken to hospital with serious injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening.
IOPC Regional Director Amanda Rowe said: “My thoughts are with the men’s family and friends after this tragic incident.
“We sent our investigators to the scene and to the post incident procedures to begin gathering evidence.
“When someone dies following police contact, it is mandatory for forces to make a referral to the IOPC. Our role is to establish the circumstances of the incident and this work is already under way.”
