Essex Police officer charged with assault

An Essex Police officer will appear in court tomorrow on an assault charge following an investigation by the IOPC.

PC Glen Calvert, aged 53, is due to appear at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on 19 December to face a charge of assault by beating.

The charge relates to the officer’s actions during an incident on 19 May, after police attended an address where there were concerns for a man’s welfare.

During the incident, PC Calvert is alleged to have assaulted the man while transporting him from an address to a police van outside the property. He is alleged to have further assaulted the man when he removed him from the police van.

After completing our investigation in October, we referred a file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service, which authorised the charge.
