We have started an independent investigation into South Yorkshire Police (SYP) contact with a woman prior to her death. Amy-Leanne Stringfellow, aged 26, died in Balby, Doncaster, on Friday, 5 June.

Terence Papworth, aged 45, of Dryden Road, Balby, has been charged with her murder and is due to appear in court on 30 November.

Following a referral from SYP, we are now investigating prior contact between SYP, Ms Stringfellow and Mr Papworth and whether the SYP decision-making and actions were in accordance with policies and guidance. IOPC investigators have contacted Ms Stringfellow’s family to explain our role and how the investigation will progress.

IOPC Regional Director Miranda Biddle said: “This is a tragic case where a young woman sadly lost her life and my thoughts are with her family.

“We will be considering the force’s response to incidents reported to them prior to Amy-Leanne’s death and whether there is any learning that can be identified.

“We have contacted Amy-Leanne’s family to explain our role and we will be keeping them regularly updated as our inquiries enquiries progress.”
