A Greater Manchester Police (GMP) officer has been charged with assault following an Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) investigation.

This follows an incident in which a 29-year-old man was tasered, at an address in Dukinfield, following a report concerning his welfare in June 2018.

We completed our investigation in June 2019 and referred our evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) who made the decision to charge Police Constable Phillip Smith, aged 46, with assault occasioning actual bodily harm (Section 47).

PC Smith is due before Preston Magistrates’ Court on 13 August 2020.
